Ducks galore as Steyn shines again in UK

County wrap: South African removes Cheteshwar Pujara again while a late collapse highlights match at New Road

South Africa paceman Dale Steyn removed Indian star Cheteshwar Pujara without scoring for the second time in three days as he showed some more good signs ahead of his return to Test cricket next month.

Steyn, playing for English county side Hampshire against Yorkshire, took 4-48 from 25 overs as the visitors finished day one of the pink-ball clash on 7-315, thanks largely to a century from former England batsman Gary Ballance.

Having had Yorkshire's Pujara caught at slip for 0 in a one-day match between the two sides on Monday, Steyn again removed the Indian for a duck on Wednesday, bowling him through the gate and splaying his stumps on the turf.

But after Yorkshire had slumped to 3-21, Ballance and youngster Harry Brook (79) added 133 together before Steyn returned under lights to remove the pair as well as Jonathan Tattersall for 6.

Ballance, who is colour-blind, was superb in striking 16 fours, but the issue of pink-ball cricket in twilight was brought into focus with his dismissal late in the day.

Facing Steyn from around the wicket as the artificial light began to take effect, the left-hander seemingly did not pick up a short ball and tamely lofted it in the air on the on-side to be caught for 109.

But Ballance played down the nature of his dismissal after play.

"When we went back out after tea it took a bit of time to get used to the twilight," he said. "But I don't want to make any excuses, it was a poor shot. I just got stuck in two minds.

"After tea, from around 7(pm) onwards, it became harder than when the sun was out in the day."

Elsewhere, Lancashire suffered a stunning late collapse as Worcestershire's Ed Barnard removed four batsmen for ducks in the space of just 16 deliveries without conceding a run.

Worcestershire had batted first at New Road and made 247, including 118 from opener Daryl Mitchell, as Lancashire's Australian quick Joe Mennie picked up 4-43.

Lancashire's openers Keaton Jennings and Alex Davies then added 77 for the first wicket before Davies fell for 43 and Barnard began his incredible spell.

The right-armer removed Stephen Parry, Haseeb Hameed, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Rob Jones all without conceding a run as the visitors finished the day on 5-86.

Another Aussie in action on Wednesday was Usman Khawaja, who made just 5 for Glamorgan on day one of their match against Derbyshire.

The left-hander, who has replaced countryman Shaun Marsh at the Welsh side, had scored a superb century on debut against Warwickshire earlier this month.
