Street drives Queensland to first-innings lead

Twenty-year-old debutant Bryce Street made himself at home at the Gabba with a sparkling half-century to steer the Bulls into a strong position

A half-century by debutant Bryce Street has steered Queensland to 7-242 at stumps on a rain-hit day two of their Marsh Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia at the Gabba.

Street, 20, only received a first-class nod after Sam Heazlett pulled out with a broken finger.

Street sweeps to fifty on debut

But the left-hander didn't look out of place, lighting up a gloomy Gabba with an unbeaten 53 to help the Bulls grab a 21-run first-innings lead before bad light ended play on Saturday.

Street was feeling the heat when he arrived at the crease with Queensland at 4-132 in reply to the Redbacks' 221 following Test batsman Marnus Labuschagne's dismissal for 32.

However, he dug deep to share an 83-run fifth wicket stand with Charlie Hemphrey (64) to help the Bulls grab a first-innings lead after showers sabotaged the start of play.

"I am not surprised to see him do well, I have seen him grow and progress (in grade cricket) – I had no doubt that when he got in he would make runs," Hemphrey said of Street.

"We had the tougher batting conditions, there were difficult periods but he is a fairly strong minded young man.

"It's really pleasing to see him do well and hopefully tomorrow he can kick on."

Just more than 30 overs were bowled before tea after rain lashed the venue on Saturday.

Carey soars to reel in an absolute hanger

Showers all but washed out the first session with just four balls being bowled and also delayed the resumption of play after lunch by an hour.

Labuschagne provided a typically stoic display, working hard to keep his Test spot before the international summer by sharing a 63-run fourth wicket stand with Hemphrey.

Wes Agar's stunning start to Sheffield Shield career

Pick of the South Australian bowlers was left-hand quick Nick Winter (3-64) while Wes Agar (3-29) toiled away but failed to earn a scalp on Saturday after dismissing former Test trio Joe Burns (39), Matt Renshaw (18) and Usman Khawaja (2) late on Friday.

Queensland resumed on day two at 3-70.

Bulls allrounder Michael Neser (5-56) on Friday sent a reminder to Test selectors by ripping through the Redbacks' top order before Tom Cooper (69) and Tom Andrews (78) rescued the visitors' innings.
