Daredevils stun Mumbai in thriller

The Result: Mumbai Indians 7-194 (Suryakumar 53, Christian 2-35) lost to Delhi Daredevils 3-195 (Roy 91no, Krunal 2-21) by seven wickets on the final ball.

We Like Roy: Delhi’s Jason Roy was at the crease for the first ball of the innings and the last as he plundered an unbeaten 91 from just 53 balls to give Ricky Ponting’s side win number one for the tournament. He smashed six boundaries and a whopping six sixes in his assault, ramping up his aggression once he passed a half-century and with the game on the line. Mumbai’s Hardik Pandya had no answer for the rampaging Brit, the allrounder leaking 32 runs from his two overs and giving Roy the perfect start to capitalise on.

The Final Over: With 11 runs required for victory, Mustafizur Rahman had ball in hand and Roy looking to complete the job for Delhi. A four and a six ensued leaving just the solitary run to get from the remaining four balls. Although the equation was simple, the final run was not with the Bangladeshi quick bowling three dot balls in a row to leave Roy needing one run from the final ball with pressure mounting. The field was brought up and the England international went over the top to complete a seven-wicket victory at the 11th hour.

The Mumbai Summit: The reigning champions shuffled their order with Rohit Sharma (18) demoting himself down to No.4, Suryakumar Yadav (53) joining West Indian Evin Lewis (48) at the top of the order. The move proved a masterstroke early as the opening partnership yielded 102 runs from nine overs and had the Daredevils scrambling for solutions. When Lewis departed, Ishan Kishan (44) stepped up to keep the runs flowing at the Wankhede Stadium. Some quick wickets at the back end restricted the home side, but it was those at the top who contributed the lion’s share, the opening trio combining for 75 per cent of Mumbai’s total score.

The Aussie Pack: Aussies featured only on Ricky Ponting’s side for this match, Dan Christian leaking 35 runs from his three overs but picking up two vital scalps back-to-back. After conceding 18 runs to Evin Lewis in his first over, he roared back to have both Ishan Kishan and Kieron Pollard bowled from consecutive deliveries. Glenn Maxwell made a quick-fire 13 from six deliveries, but a brilliant outfield catch by Hardik Pandya got the better of the Aussie allrounder.

The Next Stop: Delhi will get a chance to get consecutive victories when they meet Chris Lynn’s Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday whilst the winless-Mumbai take on Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore on Wednesday to try and get the ball rolling for IPL 11.
