England crush Sri Lanka, secure ODI series

Hosts cruise to an eight-wicket win after pace pair Willey and Curran rip through Sri Lankans at The Oval

England seamers Sam Curran and David Willey have shared nine wickets to set up a crushing eight-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the second one-day international at the Kia Oval.

The hosts then chased down the target of 242 with seven overs to spare to go 2-0 up in the three-match ODI series.

Curran took 5-48 from his 10 overs while fellow left-armer Willey grabbed 4-64 as Sri Lanka made 9-241 after recovering from 4-21 in the seventh over.

It never looked remotely enough as Jason Roy (60) started the chase strongly before Joe Root – unbeaten on 68 – and captain Eoin Morgan (75 not out) iced the result in front of a 12,500-strong crowd.

England got off to a flier as Curran took the first three wickets in his first two overs, leaving Sri Lanka 3-12.

It soon became 4-21 when Willey had Charith Asalanka caught.

Dhananjaya de Silva, ably assisted by Wanindu Hasaranga (26) and Dasun Shanaka, steadied the ship.

De Silva, who missed the first game of the series on Tuesday, eventually departed for an entertaining run-a-ball 91.

Shanaka was caught off Willey for 47 in the 45th over, just when it had appeared that the tourists might be able to scramble a defendable total.

England's bowlers smelled blood, however, and Curran completed his first five-wicket haul for his country.

Sri Lanka's total was some improvement on the first match when they were all out for 185, which England knocked off in 35 overs.

Sri Lanka needed early wickets again to have any chance but their attack lacked menace as England's prodigious opening duo of Roy and Jonny Bairstow put on an untroubled 71 before the latter played on for 29.

The final ODI is in Bristol on Sunday.
