Heather Graham and Nicole Bolton have carried Perth Scorchers to a thrilling Super Over victory over the Hobart Hurricanes in the Rebel WBBL.
With scores level on 173 after the Scorchers’ chase, Bolton came out and struck a smart 15 from 5 deliveries to help set the Hurricanes a target of 17 from six deliveries.
Then, Graham held her nerve to bowl a dot to Smriti Mandhana before removing the India superstar next delivery and while Heather Knight kept things interesting when she struck a six from the fourth ball, she too holed out as Hobart ended on 2-10.
It was Graham who forced the match into a Super Over when she hit 16 runs from the final over. Facing the off-spin of Knight, she struck 2, 4, 4 – dropped by Erin Fazackerley with the ball going to the boundary – 2, 2 and 2 to level scores.
Her unbeaten knock of 44 from 30 deliveries was critical after captain Elyse Villani (41 off 34) had earlier given the Scorchers a fast start in their pursuit of Hobart’s 7-173.
Earlier, the Hurricanes made a fast start after winning the toss thanks to openers Smriti Mandana and Fazackerley, who carried Hobart to 0-59 in the sixth over before the former was caught on 38 (23).
After a string of low scores Fazackerley (36 off 26) found a better balance to her aggressive approach, reaching the boundary three times and clearing it twice before she too departed, courtesy of an excellent running catch from Villani.
Stefanie Daffara (31 off 29) added important runs, and while in-form pair Heather Knight (9) and Georgia Redmayne (9) couldn’t follow suit, handy cameos from captain Sasha Moloney (23 off 12) and Corine Hall (16 off 10) helped the hosts to 7-173.
Bolton, more generally known for her prowess with the bat, finished the best of the Scorchers bowlers, her four overs reaping figures of 3-20.
Next stop for the Hurricanes is a clash with the Sydney Thunder at Manuka Oval on Friday (1.50pm AEDT) while the Scorchers head home to Perth, where they’ll play the Melbourne Renegades at the WACA Ground on Saturday (4.30pm WST).
