India storm home for ODI win, De Kock denied century

Axar Patel finished with a flurry as India ran down the West Indies in Trinidad but acros the Atlantic England and South Africa had their third ODI washed out

India stormed home on the back of Axar Patel's 35-ball 64no to chase down West Indies' 311 and seal the ODI series with a game to spare.

Windies opener Shai Hope scored a century in his 100th ODI but Patel's innings, including the winning six, saw India claim a two-wicket win India with two balls to spare to take a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

The home side won the toss and chose to bat first at Queen's Park Oval, reaching 6-311 thanks to Hope's 135-ball 115 — with eight fours and three sixes — and 74 from captain Nicholas Pooran, who clouted six sixes.

India chased down the imposing target, scoring 8-312 in 49.4 overs. As well as No.7 Patel's match-winning innings, key knocks came from Shreyas Iyer (63 runs off 71 balls), Sanju Samson (54) and opener Shubman Gill (43).

India started the last over needing eight runs for victory but with only two wickets left. Medium pacer Kyle Mayers (2-48) bowled the over and only two runs came off his first three deliveries, leaving India still requiring six runs off three balls.

Patel only need the one, smashing Mayers' fourth delivery for six.

India won the series opener by three runs on Friday after West Indies chose to field first — reaching 6-305 in reply to India's 7-308.

Both teams made one change Sunday from that match — injured Gudakesh Motie was replaced by fellow spinner Hayden Walsh for West Indies, while Prasidh Krishna lost his place in the India line-up to Avesh Khan, who returned 0-54 from six overs.

Shardul Thakur was India's most successful bowler with 3-54 in seven overs, dismissing both Hope and Pooran.

The series-concluding ODI is at the same venue on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, England and South Africa have drawn their one-day international series 1-1 after the third and final match had to be abandoned because of rain at Headingley.

Only 27.4 overs were possible in Leeds, during which South Africa reached 2-159, before a no result was called midway through the afternoon on Sunday.

There had been a first rain delay in the 21st over - when the Proteas were 2-119 - and a resumption, by which time the match was reduced to 45 overs a side.

But only 6.5 overs more were possible before the players were forced off by more rain and never returned.

Quinton de Kock was 92 not out off 76 balls and looked to be on course for an 18th ODI century when the rains came again.

Janneman Malan (11) and Rassie van der Dussen (26) were the batters to lose their wickets.

The abandonment scuppered England's hopes of securing a first white-ball series victory since Jos Buttler took over the captaincy from the retired Eoin Morgan.

England went into Sunday's match looking to avoid the prospect of a third straight white-ball series defeat, having lost five of their previous eight ODI or Twenty20 matches this month.
