Sunrisers shine despite Lynn blitz

The Result: Kolkata Knight Riders 8-138 (Lynn 49, Bhuvneshwar 3-26) lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad 5-139 (Williamson 50, Narine 2-17) by five wickets with six balls to spare.

Lynnsanity finds form: Chris Lynn’s start to the IPL tournament wasn’t up to his lofty standards but the Queenslander showed glimpses in the first two matches. The master-blaster was clearly just warming up, unleashing his devastating power on the Sunrisers bowling attack. He hit seven boundaries and a six in his 49 from just 34 balls, taking to countryman Billy Stanlake and Bhuvneshwar Kumar – those two combining for five wickets – and showcasing his brutish ability. He gave himself a platform and in the 12th over had plenty of time to go bigger, but a return catch and the outstretched hand of Shakib Al Hasan (2-21) saw his demise.

Big Billy Stanlake: Standing at 204cm tall, Billy Stanlake has proved gigantic in more ways than one for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He has contributed in each of the three opening matches, with 2-21 against Kolkata enough to see him named player of the match. He was helped by two brilliant catches from Manish Pandey, though he needed no assistance with tight lines and sheer pace, troubling the Knight Riders' top order and forcing wayward shots that eventually found fielders.

He gets better with age: At 35, you’d forgive Yusuf Pathan for slowing down, but as others reach the twilight of their careers at his age – the allrounder is seemingly just getting better. In his 11th IPL season with his third franchise, the fifth-most capped player of all-time has taken a new role, anchoring the lower-order at No.7. After Kane Williamson departed, Pathan faced a tricky equation of 20 runs from 16 deliveries and duly dispatched the bowlers to finish with an unbeaten 17 from seven balls. Two boundaries and a six coming at a time where the game was on the line, helping the Sunrisers to their first ever win at Eden Gardens and giving Pathan victory over his former teammates.

The Aussie Pack: The Queenslanders shined in the Gardens, Billy Stanlake taking out top honours whilst Chris Lynn top scored for his franchise in a losing cause. The only other Aussie to feature was Mitchell Johnson, re-joining the Knight Riders side after being omitted from their last fixture and claiming 1-30 from his three overs with the new ball.

The Next Stop: Kolkata will once again host on Tuesday with Ricky Ponting’s Delhi Daredevils coming to town on the back of their first victory, with the top-of-the-table Sunrisers getting a six-day break before they travel to Mohali and meet Aaron Finch’s Kings XI Punjab on Friday.
