Rahul smashes unbeaten ton, Sams gets Stoinis for a duck

KL Rahul has scored his second hundred of the season for newcomers Lucknow as they consigned the winless Mumbai Indians to an eighth straight IPL defeat

KL Rahul has hammered his second hundred of the season as Mumbai Indians crashed to their eighth straight defeat in the Indian Premier League.

Riding on Rahul's 103 not out, Lucknow Super Giants beat last-place Mumbai by 36 runs on Sunday, racking up 6-168 in their 20 overs before restricting Mumbai to 8-132.

Lucknow lost Quinton de Kock (10) early after Mumbai won the toss but Rahul, who had also scored 103 not out eight days earlier against Mumbai, stroked his way to a half-century off 37 balls.

The skipper smacked 12 fours and four sixes overall during his 62-ball stay to register a fourth IPL hundred of his career – and his third against Mumbai, the first of which came in 2019.

Mumbai's bowlers had a good outing as they restricted Lucknow to a par score.

Jasprit Bumrah returned 1-31 in four overs, while Kieron Pollard took 2-8 in two overs and Australian paceman Riley Meredith took 2-40.

Meredith struck twice in the death overs, removing Deepak Hooda for 10 before dismissing Ayush Badoni (14) in the final over of the innings.

Countryman Daniel Sams (1-40) struck the big blow when Marcus Stoinis, promoted to No.4, was out for a three-ball duck as he mistimed a pull shot straight to deep midwicket.

Lucknow suffered a middle-order collapse, falling to 5-121 in 15.3 overs, before Rahul rescued them.

Mumbai's return to the Wankhede Stadium after two years went from bad to worse as they began the chase, losing Ishan Kishan (8) and Dewald Brevis (3) cheaply.

Skipper Rohit Sharma (39) got another start, but ultimately skied a catch off Krunal Pandya (3-19).

Mumbai fell to 3-58 and then slipped to 4-67 in 11.2 overs as Suryakumar Yadav was out for seven to Badoni.

Tilak Varma threw his bat around but his 38 off 27 wasn't enough. Pollard was out for 19 off 20 balls and Sams could only manage three, both dismissed by Pandya.

Classic! The best catches of the 2021-22 summer

"It was a hard-fought win. We planned and executed well," Pandya said. "Rahul's knock was terrific and he is leading from the front. We bowled slower and made it hard for their batters."

Lucknow climbed to fourth and are tied on 10 points with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore while Mumbai remains winless at the bottom of the table.
