Match Recap: Sixers defeat Hurricanes

Ellyse Perry’s second half-century of the tournament has led the Sydney Sixers to a 16-run victory over the Hobart Hurricanes

Match in a tweet: Ellyse Perry destroys the Hurricanes with bat and ball to keep the Sixers at the top of the WBBL|02 ladder

The score: Sydney Sixers 6-134 (Perry 60) in 20 overs defeated the Hobart Hurricanes 8-118 (Hall 42) in 20 overs by 16 runs

The hero: Sixers captain Ellyse Perry led from the front to notch up her second fifty of WBBL|02, propelling the Sixers to a competitive score of 6-134. Given three lives, Perry took full toll on the Hurricanes bowlers by going berserk after she was dropped for the third time, smashing 39 from the next 18 balls she faced.  Perry’s innings of 60 included three fours and three massive sixes. She also bowled her allocated four overs finishing with figures of 1-19, taking the key wicket of Hurricanes opener Georgia Redmayne.

The support cast: Sarah Aley continued her purple patch with the ball taking 3-20 from her four overs. The medium pacer proved to be a difficult customer for the Hurricanes batters as she bamboozled them with her clever changes of pace along with her late swing. Aley produced a superb inswinger to castle Amy Satterthwaite (1) before deceiving Veronica Pyke (42) and Emma Thompson (8) with her slower ball. Aley also contributed with the bat, scoring 16 from 10 balls to share a handy 42-run stand with Perry for the sixth wicket.

The drop: Perry is not the type of cricketer you want to drop and the Hurricanes committed that crime on three occasions. The first couple of chances were extremely difficult but the third one dropped by Hayley Matthews when Perry was on 21 from 36 balls was a sitter. To make matters worse for Matthews, the ball slipped through her fingers and bounced over the rope for a four.

Perry's drop proves costly

The consolation act: After missing the first few games of the season Julie Hunter has been magnificent with the ball for the Hurricanes. The seasoned campaigner's control and swing with the new ball caused plenty of headaches for the Sixers top-order. Bowling her four overs on the trot, Hunter removed Alyssa Healy (11) before knocking over the in-form Ashleigh Gardner for three. Hunter finished with outstanding figures of 4-1-13-2 which included 13 dot balls.

The shot: Perry took a liking to a tossed up delivery by Hayley Matthews by lofting the off-spinner onto the grandstand roof.

The next stop:  The Hurricanes head back to Hobart to tackle the Sydney Thunder on 16 January while the Sixers have 24 hours to recover before their local derby against the Thunder at the SCG.
