The result: Melbourne Renegades 121 (Stoinis 3-19) lost to Melbourne Stars 4-124 (Stoinis 70no) by six wickets
The match in a tweet: The Incredible Stoin does it! Stars allrounder SMASHES Renegades to move off the bottom of the ladder. #BBL08
The hero: Marcus Stoinis did it all. First, he captured 3-19 with the ball including the big wicket of Cameron White, clean bowled for one to restrict the 'Gades to just 121. He then backed it up opening the batting, scoring 70 from 65 balls to deliver the Stars a much-needed win. Stoinis has had a big week, playing three one-day internationals for his country and a match-winning hand in the BBL tonight.

The hulking: Stoinis lit up the internet when he flexed and flexed hard in the second ODI against India in Adelaide, immediately drawing comparisons with Marvel comic book character The Hulk. At Marvel Stadium on Saturday, the 'hulk' celebration returned, only this time it was from Renegades quick Kane Richardson directed at Stoinis after the dismissal of Peter Handscomb. Not quite the physical presence of Stoinis, Richardson's attempt was laughed off by the Stars allrounder.
Kane Richardson gets Handscomb, turns to Marcus Stoinis and pulls out the Hulk celebration! 😂 Don't poke the bear, Kane! #BBL08 pic.twitter.com/hXgjO6WXDS— KFC Big Bash League (@BBL) January 19, 2019
The consolation act: Richardson moved back to the top of the wicket-takers list with 2-17 from four overs. The right-armer removed Handscomb and power-hitter Nic Maddinson. It backs up his player-of-the-match performance against the Sixers on Wednesday as he continues to push for higher honours.
The collapse: At 0-30 after 2.4 overs, the Renegades were flying. Thirteen balls later they had lost four wickets for the addition of only three runs. Two terrific catches removed openers Marcus Harris and Aaron Finch; Dwayne Bravo with a one-handed hanger to dismiss Harris, Maddinson covering good ground to swoop on a skied Finch mis-hit. Sam Harper and White were then castled to silence the massive crowd and have the men in green jubilant.
The catch: We touched on it briefly above, but Bravo's effort at mid-on really was spectacular. Harris got a fair bit of bat on it, but Bravo was up to the task, scrambling back to throw up the right hand and reel in the chance. The veteran was conservative in his celebration, leaving us to ask: Where has the Champion dance gone?
The run-out: Richardson might have spaghetti arms (he said it, not us), but the fast bowler has a rocket throw on him as powerful and accurate as his idol, baseball legend Kenny Powers. Fielding at deep mid-wicket, Richardson sprinted, gathered and fired the ball from the deep mid-wicket rope to right beside the stumps where the bowler, Cameron Boyce, barely had to move to take the ball and remove the bails. Glenn Maxwell was run out despite a desperate dive, much to the delight of the hosts.
The stat: This isn't one Ben Dunk will want to see, but one he is very aware of. While he was mic'd up in the field, he alerted the Fox Cricket commentators to the fact he'd never scored a run at Marvel Stadium. He'd only batted once but was out for a golden duck. Well, history repeated. Facing off-spinner Mohammed Nabi, Dunk missed a ball that gripped, straightened down the line and clipped off stump. Two innings, two balls, two golden ducks.
Oh no! Ben Dunk has faced two balls at Marvel Stadium and been out twice! Gone for a golden duck, Stars 1-3 #BBL08 pic.twitter.com/jLjbSkAaJt— cricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) January 19, 2019
The next stops: The Renegades travel to Sydney to take on the Thunder on Tuesday before the Stars host the Strikers the following day in Victorian country town Moe.
