Stars shine in Geelong Smash

Maxwell in fine fettle as the Melbourne Stars take out the 'Summer Smash' at Simonds Stadium

Melbourne Stars snatched some early bragging rights over their cross-town rivals as the KFC Big Bash League headed to Geelong on Friday night.

Glenn Maxwell delivered with a speedy 37 not out from 33 balls as the Stars successfully chased the Renegades' 8-144 with 15 balls and six wickets to spare in the 'Summer Smash' exhibition game at Simonds Stadium.

Opener Marcus Stoinis (6) was the only Stars batsman to miss out, with knocks from import Luke Wright (34 off 22), Rob Quiney (26 off 16) and evergreen skipper David Hussey (22 off 21) ensuring the chase was never in doubt.

Earlier, the Renegades elected to bat and made a promising start courtesy of Callum Ferguson (29) and Aaron Finch (18), while Matthew Wade was impressive in his return from a fractured collarbone, sending two balls into the 10,000-strong crowd on his way to a 31-ball 44.

Stars quick Scott Boland - whose impressive start to the Sheffield Shield season saw him put on standby for the ongoing first Test in Hobart - grabbed 3-36 from his four overs, while new recruit Adam Zampa spun his way to 2-20, picking up the key wickets of South Australian teammates Ferguson and Tom Cooper.

The exhibition match was part of the inaugural 'Geelong Carnival of Cricket' and was the first time cricket had been played under lights at Simonds Stadium.

The touring West Indies side will also play at Simonds Stadium against a Victorian Invitational XI in the 'Calypso on Corio' clash to be held on December 19-20.
