Siddle, Williams clash after tense final over

A dropped catch, a huge six and some late fireworks feature in tense finish to Canadian T20 clash

Australian Peter Siddle has found himself at the centre of a fiery and action-packed finish to Toronto's clash against Montreal in the Canadian Global T20 league.

Needing 19 runs to win with seven balls remaining, the Toronto Nationals put themselves in the box seat with consecutive sixes; Mohammad Sami hit Sunil Narine for a maximum from the last ball of the 19th over, before Kieron Pollard did the same to Siddle from the first delivery of the final over.

Siddle should have removed Pollard the next ball but young West Indian Nicholas Kirton spilled a simple chance at long on, with the ball trickling into the rope to add four more runs to the total.

Siddle reels in ripper return catch

Despite the blunder, Kirton recovered and took a pressure catch from the next delivery, holding his nerve under a high ball to dismiss Pollard and bring Montreal to within one wicket of victory.

A single from the third-last delivery brought No.11 Kesrick Williams on strike with two runs needed and two balls remaining. Siddle then produced a brilliant leg-cutter that beat the bat and somehow missed the stumps, bringing the equation down to two runs needed off the final ball.

And the right-hander delivered, hitting a boundary straight down the ground and celebrating exuberantly before appearing to yell something in Siddle's direction.

The Australian objected and confronted Williams as the players from both sides shook hands, with Toronto skipper Darren Sammy playing peacemaker between the two parties.

"(Williams) has had words with Peter Siddle," Kiwi Simon Doull observed in commentary. "There's no need for that. There's no need for that at all.

Smith finds trademark touch, good fortune in 55

"There's a little bit of by-play going on out there. No need for the chat from Kesrick Williams. Darren Sammy has got to get in the middle here. A little bit of over-exuberance."

Banned Australian batsman Steve Smith had earlier been dismissed for three for Toronto, while fellow Aussie Moises Henriques hit an important 50 from 39 balls for Montreal. Siddle finished with 3-45 from his four overs, while Henriques also picked up a wicket and Sri Lankan great Lasith Malinga returned impressive figures of 3-11 from four.

The playoffs of Global T20 tournament begin this week ahead of the tournament final on Sunday.
