Redbacks fight back through Winter's five

Hughes and Patterson share century stand for Blues but SA take day one honours in Sydney

Emerging South Australian paceman Nick Winter has marked himself down as a potential star of the future after reviving the Redbacks' hopes late on day one of their Sheffield Shield match against NSW.

Winter collected 5-48 from 25.4 impressive overs as NSW were bowled out for 256 just before stumps were drawn at the SCG on Friday.

Winter comes to SCG with five-wicket haul

It is a second five-wicket haul in as many matches for the 24-year-old who debuted for the Redbacks last weekend against Victoria.

NSW ended the day with an odd-looking scorecard after opener Daniel Hughes (93) and Kurtis Patterson (89) scored the vast majority of the runs, while extras contributed 30.

Hughes carries Blues with fighting 93

Hughes seemed set to mark his 29th birthday with a gritty century before his 214-ball knock ended when he was caught behind off the bowling of Daniel Worrall (2-59).

Patterson was bowled by Winter amid a final-session collapse as the Blues lost their final eight wickets for 73.

Poised Patterson impresses with important knock

Both sides are desperate for a win with second-placed NSW knocked off top spot last weekend, while South Australia slipped to the bottom of the standings following their home defeat at the hands of Victoria
