Sangha, Zampa spin NSW to big SCG win

It was a day for the home spinners at the SCG, as Tanveer Sangha and Adam Zampa propelled NSW to a dominant Marsh Cup win over Victoria

Teenager Tanveer Sangha and his fellow emerging NSW stars have excelled at the SCG, rocketing their side to a resounding one-day victory over Victoria.

Adam Zampa, playing his first game for the Blues since shifting to South Australia in 2013, made a long-awaited return for his home state in the 174-run win.

Zampa, who avoided the need to quarantine by flying into Sydney after helping Australia win the Twenty20 World Cup for the first time, finished with figures of 2-44.

Fellow legspinner Sangha was even more destructive in the rout, snaring 4-21 from 7.2 overs to finish the hosts' leading wicket-taker.

Dream debut for terrific Tanveer Sangha

Sangha removed James Seymour and Matt Short in the space of three deliveries as Victoria, pursuing a target of 345, collapsed to be all out for 170 in 32.2 overs.

Sangha, who was part of Australia's T20 squad earlier this year, and wicketkeeper Baxter Holt both impressed while making their one-day debut for NSW.

Holt exhibited composure beyond his years, blasting NSW to a total of 7-344 that represented their fourth-highest one-day score.

Holt's unbeaten 41, coming off just 21 balls and featuring consecutive sixes off James Pattinson, helped his side take 96 runs off their final 10 overs.

Chris Tremain (27 not out), Daniel Sams (21) and Hayden Kerr (43) also cleared the rope as NSW finished with a flurry of boundaries.

Kerr, playing his first one-dayer for NSW since debuting in 2019, backed it up with the scalps of captain Peter Handscomb and Jonathan Merlo.

It was the Blues' first win of a season restricted so far to clashes with Victoria because of border closures.

Holt, who was mentored by Alyssa Healy as a young keeper, represented Australia at the under-19 World Cup in 2018 and played a Twenty20 tour game against Pakistan in 2019.

The young gun was tipped for big things, only for a debilitating back injury to stall his progress.

Holt was set to undergo surgery because of the bulging disc but consulted a specialist and opted to essentially reprogram his body over the course of 12 months.

"I pretty much had to re-teach myself to move and how to walk, how to stand up just so I wasn't in all that pain," he said in 2020.

Mackenzie Harvey (55) and Jake Fraser-McGurk (45) gave their side hope of hauling in the target but the wheels came off in a collapse of 9-95.

Matthew Gilkes, who was left to lament a questionable umpiring decision after being judged caught behind, top scored for NSW with 51.
