Scorchers stun 'Gades with epic chase

The heroes: Ashton Turner has regularly threatened to steal a Big Bash show but tonight was the night he finally did it. The big-hitting right-hander was in superb touch, finding the rope – and clearing it – around the full 360 degrees as he pushed the Scorchers towards an improbable chase. He forged a lethal partnership with David Willey, the English allrounder who has regularly produced with the ball but, like Turner, perhaps under-delivered with the bat.

The support cast: On a night when every other Scorchers bowler went for at least eight an over, Mitch Johnson's 1-23 from four overs was super impressive – particularly when that one was Renegades danger man Aaron Finch. And what a super late cameo under pressure from Ashton Agar (26no off 17), who goes from strength to strength with bat and ball in this tournament. 

The consolation effort: Cameron White and Tom Cooper put on a T20 show to remember, combing T20 trickery with super timing and outrageous power. It was 10 overs of sheer entertainment, as the pair combined for 98 runs and took the momentum completely away from the defending champs. White's 68no from 55 balls put him on top of the BBL|07 run-scorer's list, while Cooper ambled to 16 from 22 before exploding – he finished with 57, with his final 41 runs coming from just 12 balls.

The turning point: Brad Hogg was busy signing autographs on the fence when he turned, walked back beyond the rope and immediately had to react to a chance coming his way. He spilled a tough catch, gave Turner a life, and the big-hitting right-hander took full advantage, scoring 17 from the next over to shift the balance of the contest.

Matters only got worse for Hogg as, with what was meant to be the final ball of his career at the WACA, he bowled a full bunger that was swatted for six by Turner. Next ball, the batsman repeated the dose from the free hit, ensuring a rather ignominious exit for the 46-year-old. More fittingly, his final spell did include a classic wrong'un and subsequent stumping. 

The classic catch: Young Scorchers 'keeper Josh Inglis spilled a skied sitter but he also showed what he was capable of with the gloves, snaring this excellent grab to remove Finch.

The stat: Jhye Richardson has had a tough run of things in recent outings and the right-arm quick struggled again tonight, recording the most expensive BBL figures ever at the WACA, with 0-55.

The shot: Sit back and enjoy this outrageous piece of batting from White.

The Fantasy wrap: It was ton-up for Turner, who posted 102 points to make some players very happy with his handiwork, while reasonably priced Renegades pair Harris (80) and Cooper (76) rounded out the top three. 

The next stops: The Scorchers are up again on Thursday, when they take on the Thunder in Sydney (7.40pm local), while the Renegades head home for a return derby with Melbourne Stars on Friday night at Etihad.
