Ellis finishes IPL on a high with three-wicket haul

Nathan Ellis returned to help lead Punjab Kings to a consolation win over Sunrisers Hyderabad with three wickets

Nathan Ellis took 3-40 as Punjab Kings notched a consolation five-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in their last Indian Premier League match of the season.

Aussie pace bowler Ellis and left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar (3-26) restricted Hyderabad to 8-157 in their 20 overs on Sunday.

Opening batsman Abhishek Sharma top-scored with 43 before Liam Livingstone plucked a superb catch on the edge of the boundary in Brar's second over.

Englishman Livingstone then smashed an unbeaten 49 off 22 balls – though he was dropped twice – as Punjab raced to 6-160 with more than four overs to spare.

Ellis, who famously took a hat-trick on his T20 international debut against West Indies last August, nearly had another in only his second IPL match of the season.

Ellis first removed the dangerous West Indian Nicholas Pooran with a seaming line-and-length delivery that left the left-hander enough to claim the edge for a simple catch by gloveman Jitesh Sharma.

The bowling the final over of the innings, a bouncer cramped Washington Sundar for room as he tried to lift it over the wicketkeeper's head and succeeded only in gifting a catch to short third.

Next ball Ellis was on a hat-trick again when Jagadeesha Suchith lofted a delivery to deep extra cover for a simple catch.

Flashback: Ellis claims hat-trick on international debut

Tailender Bhuvneshwar Kumar survived the hat-trick delivery, a low full toss as Ellis slightly missed the yorker, but the next delivery was wide of the stumps and missed as Punjab claimed a run out.

Punjab ended the season in sixth place with 14 points from 14 games. Hyderabad won five of their first seven league games but won only one more and ended up with 12 points.

The first matches of the Women's T20 Challenge featuring Australia's Alana King will be played before the IPL playoffs begin.
