Sri Lanka extend lead over Windies

Hosts finish 2-76 at stumps after dismissing West Indies for 163

Sri Lanka reached 2-76 at stumps in their second innings on day two of the second Test against West Indies on Friday, extending their lead to 113.

Opener Kaushal Silva (31) was batting with Dinesh Chandimal on five.

West Indies fast bowler Jerome Taylor removed Dimuth Karunaratne in the first ball of the innings when Devendra Bishoo took a brilliant diving catch.

Debutant Kusal Mendis and Silva shared 55 runs for the second wicket before Mendis (39) was caught by wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin off left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican.

Earlier, Dhammika Prasad took four wickets to help bowl out West Indies for 163 and secure a 37-run first innings lead, with the tourists bowled out on the final ball of the second session which was extended by nearly half an hour to allow the hosts to polish off the Windies' tail.

Prasad ended the innings with 4-34 while off-spinner Dilruwan Perera finished with 3-26 as he claimed the last trio of wickets to fall.

None of the West Indies batsmen reached 50, with opener Kraigg Brathwaite top-scoring with 47.

After resuming in the morning on 1-17, none of the West Indies batsmen looked comfortable and found runs harder to get as the day wore on - struggling in particular to score off the miserly Rangana Herath.

Between lunch and tea, the tourists lost six wickets for the addition of 86 runs.

Play began half an hour late due to a soggy outfield caused by heavy overnight rains. Although the light was gloomy at the start, it had improved significantly by the afternoon.

The tourists have never won a Test match in Sri Lanka in 10 previous attempts.
