Bravo show lifts Trinbago to victory

Darren Bravo's unbeaten 94-run blitz stuns St Lucia who extended winless streak to 15 matches

Darren Bravo's outrageous innings helped the Trinbago Knight Riders to an extraordinary win against the St Lucia Stars as sixes rained in the Caribbean Premier League.

Australia batsman David Warner returned to form to strike his first half-century of the tournament and snap a string of low scores, but it was not enough as St Lucia fell to a 15th consecutive defeat, having posted 2-212, their highest ever score in the competition.

Bravo struck a 36-ball unbeaten 94, including taking 32 runs from one Kieron Pollard over, while Brendon McCullum hit 68 from 42 balls to win the match with a ball to spare.

Pollard, Rahkeem Cornwall and Warner all made half-centuries to lift the Stars to 2-212, the first time a CPL team had ever had three players reach 50 in the same match.

Pollard's unbeaten 65 from 23 balls saw him reach 50 in 18 balls, equalling the fastest half-century in CPL history.

Pollard's blitz continued the work of Cornwall, who was promoted to No.3 after Andre Fletcher exited for 17, and the big-hitting cult hero helped himself to a half-century.

As that pair was going ballistic, Warner batted through the innings to finish unbeaten on 72 from 55 balls.

The home side appeared to have the game in the bag when Cornwall struck twice early with his spin to have Trinbago 2-20 in the fourth over. Sunil Narine had miscued Cornwall's first ball to be well caught by Pollard diving forward, but his second wicket was more fortuitous.

Australian master blaster Chris Lynn got a bottom edge as he aimed a huge swipe at Cornwall's delivery, the ricochet striking him plumb in front as the umpire raised his finger for leg before.

St Lucia looked well set for a win as the Knight Riders went into the last five overs of the run-chase needing another 85 runs for victory.

But Bravo smashed five sixes from Pollard’s final over, the match's 16th, and McCullum hit two more plus two fours in the next as they carved 53 of the required 85 runs in just 12 deliveries.

Cornwall, who had earlier looked to be the match hero when he added two early wickets to his half-century, was then smashed for 26 runs in the 18th over that started include four sixes by Bravo.

Mitchell McClenaghan took two wickets and conceded just two runs in the 19th over, and with scores tied on the penultimate ball of the match, Denesh Ramdin smashed the 34th six of the night over long-off to complete a remarkable Trinbago win.

The combined 34 sixes hit equalled the world record for the most maximums in a T20 match. The record was first set by Central Districts and Otago in a New Zealand T20 match in 2016.
