Kings XI lose 8-42 in Sunrisers demolition

For a second straight match, Sunrisers Hyderabad defend below-par total to claim victory

The result: Sunrisers Hyderabad 6-132 (Pandey 54, Rajpoot 5-14) defeated Kings XI Punjab 10-119 (Rahul 32, Rashid 3-19) by 13 runs.

The stunning collapse: After restricting the Sunrisers to 6-132 on their home turf, the Mohali side would have had every intention of cruising to victory with Chris Gayle (23) and KL Rahul (32) posting 55 runs for the first wicket and looking at ease. But Rashid Khan (3-19) had other ideas, delivering the ball of the tournament to castle Rahul, as Basil Thampi (2-14) had Gayle walking back three balls later. From there, the pressure proved too much for Kings XI Punjab, losing their final eight wickets for just 42 runs, dismantled from top to bottom in a chaotic hour of cricket.

The high five: Ankit Rajpoot is now the owner of the second-best bowling figures in a losing side, claiming 5-14 from an economical four overs – behind only Adam Zampa’s 6-19 for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant. He rushed the in-form Kane Williamson (0) before Shikhar Dhawan (11) edged to first slip. Wriddiman Saha (6) was the next to depart in Rajpoot’s first spell, before returning late to remove Manish Pandey (54) and Mohammad Nabi (4) on the final delivery of the match to claim a maiden IPL five wicket haul. The 24-year-old quick is just the second Kings XI player to claim five wickets, after Dimitri Mascarenhas’ effort in 2012.

The economical effort: For the second straight match, Sunrisers Hyderabad turned to their bowlers after posting a below-par score with success, this time victorious after defending 132 and just two days after posting 118 against defending champions Mumbai, only to bowl them out for 87. Led by Rashid Khan and without experienced IPL campaigner Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the Sunrisers bowlers rose to the challenge once again and restricted the powerful Kings XI batting line-up. Five bowlers for the Hyderabad side went for less than 6.3 runs per over compared to their opposition, who had just two in that class, proving a major difference in the match.

The Aussie pack: A quiet night for the Australians featuring in the match, both on the losing side. Andrew Tye’s four overs leaked 28 runs as he went wicketless, though he had a catch on the boundary put down. A below-par IPL season continued for Aaron Finch, who hit a six before trying to replicate the feat and getting caught on the boundary for eight with the game in the balance. From five innings in IPL11, Finch has contributed a double-digit score just once.

The next stop: The Sunrisers Hyderabad face D’Arcy Short and the Rajasthan Royals on Sunday evening with Kings XI Punjab getting a six-day break before meeting the Mumbai Indians in Mohali next Saturday.
