Philippe, Vince help Sixers prevail

The Score: Sydney Sixers 1-173 (Philippe 86no, Vince 74no; Faulkner 1-22) defeated Hobart Hurricanes 4-172 (Wade 64, McDermott 41; Dwarshuis 1-25) by nine wickets with 17 balls remaining

The Hero: Josh Philippe has showed glimpses of his capabilities already this tournament, but his knock against the Hurricanes was something else. He brought up his 50 in just 25 deliveries, before showing great maturity to be there at the end and hit the winning runs on his way to an unbeaten 86. It was Philippe's maiden Big Bash half-century and many of his scoring shots were proper cricket shots that would have even impressed the cricket purists. He hit extremely well down the ground and also showed a bit of imagination late in his innings with a ramp shot off Jofra Archer that raced to the boundary. The 21-year-old is certainly a player of the future and one to jot down in your black book.

The Supporting Cast: It was a shrewd piece of business by Sixers' management to pick up James Vince midway through the tournament when they lost fellow Englishman Joe Denly to international duties. Vince has scored consecutive half-centuries for the team in magenta, with his classy 74 coming from just 50 deliveries against the Hurricanes. Vince was particularly savage on anything pushed down the leg side, as he smashed two big sixes through the square leg region and helped the Sixers cruise past the Hurricanes’ total on the first ball of the 18th over.

The Big Over: Philippe and Vince took a particular liking to Hurricanes spinner Clive Rose, with the duo taking 19 from the fourth over of the run chase that helped set them on their way. That over took the Sixers from 1-22 to 1-41 and gave them the confidence that they could chase down the big target.

The Stat: The 1-67 the Sixers compiled during the first six overs of their innings tied the Brisbane Heat for most runs scored during a powerplay at BBL|08. The Heat put together 0-67 against the Renegades earlier this month and the Sixers' effort was just as impressive.

The Consolation Act: Matthew Wade tried his valiant best to help the Hurricanes triumph as he registered his fourth half-century of the tournament and second in succession. Wade hit four fours and two sixes during his 51-ball innings of 64 as he and D'Arcy Short (32 off 26 balls) put on 67 for the first wicket. Caleb Jewell fell cheaply for the visitors, before some late hitting from Ben McDermott (41) and George Bailey (21 not out) helped the Hurricanes post a more than respectable target of 4-172. Unfortunately for them, Philippe, Vince and the Sixers were in savage mood as they easily chased down the victory target.

The Next Stop: The Sixers will be looking for a third straight triumph when they host the Adelaide Strikers at the SCG on Tuesday night, while the Hurricanes host the Brisbane Heat in Hobart earlier that same day.
