Weatherald stars as Redbacks grab last-ball wicket

Nick Winter rubs salt into Tasmania's wounds on final ball of day two after Jake Weatherald's second ton of the season against the Tigers

South Austalia opener Jake Weatherald has tormented Tasmania for the second time this Marsh Sheffield Shield season to put his side in the box seat after day two of their match in Hobart.

Weatherald propped up the innings with 126 on Sunday, a month after notching a career-best 198 against the Tigers in Adelaide.

The 25-year-old hit 14 boundaries and shared a crucial counter-attacking 128-run stand with skipper and Australia limited-overs wicketkeeper Alex Carey (73).

Weatherald punishes Tigers with sixth Shield century

The Redbacks were boosted to 346 late in the day after cameos from tailenders Joe Mennie (49 from 39 balls) and Nick Winter (42).

Weatherald has amassed 328 runs against Tasmania in the Shield this season, but just 120 across four matches against other opposition.

He and Carey came together at 3-53 in the morning session after the Redbacks lost 3-8.

Carey's strong Shield form continues with 73

Carey fell to a sharp catch by Ben McDermott at second slip but not before posting another healthy long-form contribution after his 143 last match against Western Australia.

Test-experienced quick Jackson Bird was the pick of Tasmania's quicks with 4-70 including the scalp of Weatherald, who he trapped lbw with the second new ball.

The Tigers lost Alex Doolan for a duck in a nervy 15 minutes before stumps.

They'll resume on day three at 1-6, still trailing by 86 runs.

Earlier, the winless Redbacks lost Henry Hunt (six), Callum Ferguson (0) and Will Bosisto (one) in quick succession after resuming the day at 0-26.

Youngster Daniel Drew had a debut innings to forget, out for just nine when he hit a ball from Riley Meredith into the ground and it lobbed up and landed on top of the stumps.
