NSW Metro claim U17 national championship

A second successive under-17 title for the Sydneysiders after a comprehensive win against Queensland in Brisbane

NSW Metro have gone back-to-back at the Under 17 National Championships, defeating Queensland in the tournament final at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field on Thursday.

It was a dominant performance from the NSW Metro side, who won by 141 runs in a rematch of last year's decider.

NSW Metro captain Oliver Davies won the toss and batted first and his team responded to score 6-272 off their 50 overs.

Davies (58 off 46 deliveries), Liam Scott (57 off 68) and Yuvraj Sharma (48 off 92) led the way for NSW Metro with the bat.

Fast bowler Matthew Willans was the pick of the Queensland attack, snaring 1-31 off his 10 overs.

In reply, the Queensland teenagers were dismissed for 132 in the 29th over.

The northerners couldn’t string partnerships together as NSW Metro picked up wickets at regular intervals.

Jacob Workman (2-19) and Tyson Lee (2-22) picked up multiple wickets, with six wicket-takers overall, as well as two run outs.

Harry Walker top-scored for Queensland with 29 off 44 deliveries, before being the last wicket to fall.

In the semi-finals, NSW Metro edged past South Australia to continue their unbeaten run in the tournament, while Queensland enjoyed victory against the previously undefeated Cricket Australia XI.

Tom Nicholson starred with the ball for Queensland, who won by six wickets.

Nicholson claimed 6-20 off his 10 overs as the CA XI were dismissed for just 87. James Ward (2-14 off 7 overs) and Brendan Haylett (1-10 off 10 overs) were also strong contributors for the host state.

In reply, Mac Jenkins claimed two early wickets as Queensland stumbled to 2-8.

However, an unbeaten 59 from opener Jack Cooper guided Queensland to victory in the 13th over, reaching 4-90.

NSW Metro dismissed South Australia for 152, before chasing down their target with four wickets in hand.

Liam Marshall (2-18) and Harry Manenti (2-30) led a strong team bowling effort from NSW Metro, with all seven bowlers utilised claiming at least one wicket.

Thomas Kelly top-scored for South Australia with 35 off 54 deliveries.

In reply, Tim Reynolds led the way for NSW Metro with 36 as his side chased down their target inside 30 overs.

Aryan Sareen picked up two wickets for South Australia.
