Philippe guides WA home against SA

Western Australia remain in the hunt to make the Sheffield Shield final after beating South Australia by six wickets at the WACA Ground.

The Warriors chased down the 243 before stumps on the third day, doing so four wickets down.

Emerging star Josh Philippe got them over the line remaining 53 not out after Sam Whiteman (44), Cameron Bancroft (52), Mitch Marsh (31) and Josh Inglis (29) all made solid contributions.

They'll now need to win their remaining matches against Tasmania and Queensland to be chance of finishing in the top two teams.

"It was certainly an enjoyable three days and I really enjoy leading this team," WA captain Marsh said.

"I think our second innings batting was most pleasing with the lessons we learned from the first innings. A lot of us got out driving to the swinging ball but today we applied ourselves in as tough conditions as you'll find with the ball swinging the whole time.

"When the ball is swinging like that you have to be really decisive with your feet. The way we responded with the bat was probably the most pleasing thing and I'm stoked for the boys."

South Australia are winless after eight games.

Their cause was hurt with Daniel Worrall only able to bowl one over before leaving the field with a hamstring strain.

"There's no doubt that was a big moment in the game for us," Marsh said.

"He's one of the best bowlers in the country not playing for Australia and certainly with the Dukes ball with his ability to swing it both ways he's world-class.

"I feel for him because he's had a bit of a tough run with injury lately. Hopefully for the Australian cricket team he can get back on the park and finish the season well for South Australia."

The Redbacks entered day three 8-218 with captain Travis Head looking to add to his 72 and build a defendable total.

But he fell in the opening over and the visitors were eventually all out for 240 with Matt Kelly taking a career-best 6-67.

The Warriors run chase started impressively with the only 100-run stand of the match as Bancroft and Whiteman put on 112 for the first wicket.

That set the tone for WA who steadied after both openers fell with Marsh and Inglis putting on another 61.

Philippe and Hilton Cartwright (12 not out) then saw the Warriors home with an unbroken stand of 63.
