Historic Scorpions win ends NSW streak

A ton from Sarah Taylor and some excellent work in the field hand South Australia their first WNCL title

South Australia have claimed their first ever Women's National Cricket League title, shattering NSW's hopes of a record-equalling 11th straight trophy.

Setting the Lend Lease Breakers 265 for victory, the Scorpions strangled their more fancied opponents into submission to claim a 54-run victory at Sydney's Hurstville Oval on Sunday.

The Breakers, who won 17 of the last 19 WNCL titles, were attempting to equal rugby league club St George's record of 11 consecutive premierships in Australian sport.

However, an entertaining 110 in 105 balls from the Breezair Scorpion's English import Sarah Taylor meant NSW were always chasing.

Straight and full bowling with a tight field proved the Breakers' kryptonite, as their five internationally capped top-order batters fell within the first 30 overs.

Sarah Coyte, who won her fifth title with NSW in January before switching to South Australia, proved impossible to get away, bowling three maidens in an early eight-over spell that went for just 10 runs.

Attempting to up the run rate, Rachael Haynes and Alex Blackwell were both run out before Alyssa Healy was caught at mid-on off Coyte for 37.

Eighteen-year-old legspinner Amanda Wellington claimed the prize wickets of Australian superstar Elyse Perry (20) and English international Laura Marsh in consecutive deliveries to finish with 2-34 from 7 overs.

The Breakers, through Naomi Stalenberg (58 from 38 balls) and Nicola Carey (38), put up some late resistance but when Alex Price and Megan Schutt dismissed the pair, NSW's faint hopes were diminished.

It was left to Price to take the final honours, as she bowled Lauren Cheatle to seal the historic win.

Celebrations as South Australia win first WNCL title

Earlier, Taylor's century meant the Breakers needed to achieve the second highest successful run chase in the history of the WNCL to continue their streak.

Taylor, who also scored a century in SA's one-run win over the Breakers earlier in the season, was dominant from the moment she came to the crease and brought up her century in 95 balls.

She blasted the NSW bowlers square of the wicket early, scoring 20 including four boundaries off her first 15 balls before adopting a stand-and-deliver approach and hitting down the ground.

Watch: Taylor's terrific ton powers Scorpions

Taylor was ably supported by opener Bridget Patterson, who compiled 74 off 125 balls, as the pair combined for a second-wicket partnership of 181.

The Scorpions looked set to post an even bigger total before Taylor was eventually dismissed by 17-year-old Lauren Cheatle, who was the pick of the Breakers' bowlers, claiming 2-44 from her 10 overs.

Only Victoria (2002-03 and 2004-05) and NSW (the other 17 years) had previously won WNCL titles since the start of the competition in its current form in 1996-97.
