Yorkshire win after being dismissed for 50

Essex suffer first loss since 2016 as Yorkshire pull off one of the greatest comeback wins in county history

Australian Peter Siddle took eight wickets for the match but still found himself on the losing side as Yorkshire handed Essex their first County Championship loss in 19 games despite having been bowled out for just 50 before lunch on the opening day.

Needing 141 to win on day three with six wickets in hand, Essex lost 6-49 in the morning session to lose the match by 91 runs, with Steven Patterson claiming career-best figures of 6-40.

Yorkshire's victory comes after they had survived just 18.4 overs in their first innings, with 10 of 11 batsmen failing to reach double figures.

It's the sixth-lowest first-innings total to win a county match.

Despite boasting Test stars Joe Root at Cheteshwar Pujara in their side, Yorkshire's batting hero in a low-scoring game was 19-year-old Harry Brook, who scored 124 - his maiden first-class hundred - in their second innings. England wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow also played a crucial hand, elevating himself to opener and scoring a vital 44-ball 50.

Brook and Bairstow were the only batsmen in the match to score 50 or more as Yorkshire scored 329 in their second innings after Essex had managed just 142 in their first.

"The first session was probably the worst session of cricket I've ever been involved in," Patterson said.

Siddle takes 4-7 as 22 wickets fall on day one

"But I thought the courage and the belief we showed from that moment on, for the rest of the game, was pretty impressive. A lot of people stood up at tough times and made important contributions and thankfully several days later we're celebrating victory.

" ... the one thing about Yorkshire in all the days I've been in the side is we've got tremendous belief and we've got some fantastic talent in the dressing room. We know if we truly believe and stick together you can achieve anything in the game. And that's shown in the last two days."

While Patterson returned the best figures, it was opening bowler Ben Coad broke the back of Essex's innings on the third morning by taking three of four wickets to fall in the space of 23 balls with the scored rooted on 114.

It's a first defeat for Essex, the 2017 champions, since September 2016.

Elsewhere, South Africa's Aiden Markram finally scored his first run for Durham and ultimately fell just short of a century as he led their recovery against Leicestershire at Chester-le-Street.

Markram, one of the most promising young batsmen in world cricket, had started his Durham career in dreadful fashion with a pair of noughts against Kent, and another duck in the first innings of this match.

But having made a brilliant 152 for South Africa in their series-clinching fourth Test win over Australia in Johannesburg in March, the 23-year-old showed something closer to his best form on Sunday.

Cartwright fires as Cook, Markram cop beauties

He came in with hosts Durham following on after being dismissed for 184 in reply to Leicestershire's 440 but went on to make 94. Durham ended the day on 1-233, still behind but with a draw in their sights.

At the Oval, Australian Travis Head scored 50 as Worcestershire fought back against Surrey while allrounder Hilton Cartwright made a duck ahead of what should be a tense final day of Middlesex's match against Sussex.

England batsman Dawid Malan scored 119 as Cartwright's Middlesex set Sussex 230 to win before reducing the hosts to 2-35 at stumps.
