Renshaw concussed in warm-up mishap

Queensland batsman subbed out of Shield game after suffering head knock in a collision with a teammate during warm-ups

Former Test opener Matthew Renshaw is under an injury cloud for next week's JLT Sheffield Shield final after an unfortunate warm-up mishap saw him sidelined midway through Queensland's clash with NSW .

Renshaw was diagnosed with concussion following a collision with a teammate during the Bulls' warm-up on day two of their Shield game in Wollongong.

The 21-year-old did not take to the field on Wednesday and, as a precautionary measure, was replaced in the Bulls XI by rookie batsman Lachlan Pfeffer, who had to fly down from Brisbane.

"Matt will be reassessed in Brisbane to consider recovery and possible fitness to play in the Shield final," a Queensland Cricket spokesperson added.

Cricket Australia introduced concussion substitutes into the Sheffield Shield for the first time this season under a two-year trial.

Pfeffer filled in for Renshaw at the top of the Bulls' batting order in their second innings on Thursday, making nine off 22 balls before he was bowled leaving left a vicious Trent Copeland in-swinger.

Renshaw has suffered concussion before, having been withdrawn from last summer's New Year's Test in Sydney against Pakistan after being struck twice on the helmet in three days.

He was first hit by a bouncer while batting before copping another blow while fielding at short leg two days later.

In November, Tasmania batsman Jake Doran became the first player to be subbed out in the Sheffield Shield under CA's trial, while Victoria's Will Pucovski was replaced earlier this month when he suffered a head knock against NSW.

Queensland begun the final round as runaway ladder-leaders and have since sealed top spot through bonus points, meaning they will host next week's Shield final at Brisbane's Allan Border Field.

The Bulls will host the winner of the Victoria-Tasmania clash in Hobart in the JLT Sheffield Shield decider. If that match is a draw, the Tigers will finish as the higher-placed team and progress to the final.
