Veteran Klinger to depart Scorchers

The experienced top order batsman will leave the most successful side in Big Bash history after one final cameo against the Stars

Perth Scorchers veteran Michael Klinger has revealed this KFC BBL season will be his last, with a home farewell to take place against the Melbourne Stars on Sunday night.

Klinger will leave the Perth side after five successful seasons, having helped them to two BBL titles (BBL|04 and BBL|06) and scored a huge amount of runs at the top of the order.

Up until Friday night Klinger was the leading Big Bash run scorer of all time, with Brisbane Heat skipper Chris Lynn overtaking the experienced batsman with his half-century against the Scorchers.

Klinger has already committed to playing in the UKT20 competition later this year and it is unknown whether he will attempt to prolong his BBL career with another club next season.

The Scorchers currently sit on the bottom of the BBL|08 ladder and Klinger is hoping he will be able to sit back and watch the Perth side climb back up into finals contention in the coming years.

"I would like to announce that this will be my last season with the Perth Scorchers," Klinger said on Saturday.

"This season so far has not gone to plan for both myself but more importantly the team and I’m looking forward to seeing the Scorchers get back to the top where we belong next season.

"I have fantastic memories of my time with the Scorchers and I’d like to thank my teammates, coaching and support staff and all our fantastic fans for making my time so meaningful and enjoyable at this great club. Also, a huge thank you to my family for their continued unconditional support.

"Looking forward to what the future holds for me in cricket either on or off the field. Go Scorchers!!"

Scorchers coach and former teammate Adam Voges said Klinger's influence on the club has been excellent, both on and off the field.

"Maxy’s contribution to the Perth Scorchers has been outstanding," he said.

"On the field his record speaks for itself and he has played a huge part in our success in recent years.

"Off the field you will not meet a nicer person who always puts the teams needs ahead of his own. We wish Maxy, Cindy and the family all the best for the future."
