White Ferns ring changes to face Aussies

NZ pick 20-year-old rookie quick for three-match ODI series against Southern Stars

New Zealand have called an uncapped pace bowler into their 14-player one-day international squad to play Australia in the Commonwealth Bank Women's ODI series beginning later this month.

Right-armer Rosemary Mair is in line to make her ODI debut in the three-match series, while the White Ferns have also regained the services of in-form wicketkeeper Katey Martin, who was absent for the team's recent 2-1 one-day series defeat to India on home soil.

Mair, 20, made her international debut in New Zealand's first T20I against India last Wednesday, taking three wickets across the first two matches as the White Ferns took an unassailable 2-0 lead over their subcontinent rivals.

Martin, who was New Zealand's leading run-scorer during last year's three-game T20I series in Australia, missed the 50-over matches against India due to work commitments but returned for the 20-over games, posting scores of 27no, 13 and 8.

"We want to give Rosemary an opportunity," New Zealand coach Haidee Tiffen said.

"She bowls that hard, heavy length and challenges the batters, so we are looking at what she can offer in the one-day format.

"Katey brings plenty of experience to the middle order and is a proven performer at the international level.

"She also provides plenty of energy behind the stumps which not only helps the bowlers but gets the team up."

There three changes in total from the ODI squad the White Ferns fielded against India in last month's loss, with Mair, Martin and Hayley Jensen in for Holly Huddleston and Bernadine Bezuidenhout.

New Zealand are looking to arrest a recent run of disappointing results – their current T20I series against India aside – having lost their T20I series to Australia last October before being knocked out of the group stage of last November's T20 World Cup.

Despite those results and the ODI series loss to India, Tiffen believes her team can win their first Rose Bowl series against Australia since 1999.

"We talk a lot about partnerships and I predict it is going to be a high-scoring series," she said.

"For us, it's about working through the ups and downs of ODI cricket – the hunger and desire is there to step up against Aussie in their own backyard.

"Lea Tahuhu played a WBBL game at the WACA I'm looking forward to seeing her on a bouncy wicket, bowling fast and taking it to the Australian batting lineup."

Australia are expected to name their squad for the three-match series this week.

The series will kick off at the WACA Ground on February 22, before matches at Adelaide's Karen Rolton Oval (February 24) and Melbourne's Junction Oval (March 3).
