ICC suspends Sri Lanka's Dickwella

Opening batsman cops two-match ban for showing dissent at an umpire's decision during second T20I against Australia

Sri Lanka's Niroshan Dickwella has been suspended for two limited-over matches after he was found guilty of 'showing dissent at an umpire's decision' during Sunday's second T20I against Australia.

Dickwella had made his way to 14 in the early stages of his side's incredible run chase at Geelong's Kardinia Park, when he was given out caught behind by Tim Paine from the bowling of James Faulkner.

The left-hander had been looking to scoop the ball towards fine leg and replays suggested ball did in fact miss bat, instead grazing his shoulder on the way through to Paine.

Upon being given out, his frustrated reaction was deemed sufficient by the International Cricket Council to receive a fine of 30 per cent fine of his match fee and two demerit points.

Dickwella's accumulated demerit points has now reached five within a 24-month period – the consequence of which is the two-match ban.

The opening batsman was in hot water only a fortnight ago, on that occasion colliding with Proteas paceman Kagiso Rabada at the non-striker's end during an ODI in Cape Town.

That offence fell under the category of "inappropriate and deliberate physical contact", with both players admitting the offence and accepting 50 per cent match fee fines and losses of three demerit points.

Dickwella's latest indiscretion means he will miss Wednesday's third T20I against Australia at the Adelaide Oval.

Sri Lanka already hold an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, having prevailed from the final ball in each of the first two contests.

Play in the third match in Adelaide begins at 7.20pm local time, and is part of a double header, with the Southern Stars taking on the White Ferns in a series decider at the same venue from 1.35pm local time.
