Pakistan skipper looking for response in Adelaide

Pakistan captain Azhar Ali knows playing catch-up in Australia doesn't work, calling on his side to take their chances when they arrive in Adelaide next Friday.

The visitors lost by an innings and five runs at the Gabba on Sunday afternoon, bowled out for 335 in a second innings that at least provided some positives after three long days of torment.

A breezy Babar Azam century and 95 to wicketkeeper Muhammad Rizwan in just his second Test showed their potential, while Azhar is backing his youthful bowling attack to learn plenty after Australia piled on 580.

The decisive period came on day one though, when Pakistan went the first session without losing a wicket only to lose five in the next.

It comes after Pakistan made 450 in the final innings of their pink ball Test at the same ground three years ago, only to lose by 39 runs.

"When you play Test cricket in Australia, you cannot afford to go behind as it is very difficult to then catch up," Azhar said.

"The way we won the toss and we played in the first session without losing a wicket, that was an opportunity for us to go in front and take the initiative in the game.

"That chance we lost in the second session and that made sure we could't reach the kind of total we needed to put pressure on them."

Azhar said they would "rethink their strategy" in an indication changes could be made to their misfiring top six, while he backed their bowlers after omitting the experienced Mohammad Abbas in Brisbane.

"The young attack has a lot of potential but you can't buy experience and it's never easy in a place like Australia," he said.

"I believe if they manage to do that (bowl in good areas) from the start of the innings, they'll be a totally different attack after that."
