De Kock, Duminy to captain Proteas

Wicketkeeper to lead South Africa for first time in final two ODIs against Sri Lanka following injury to Faf du Plessis

Quinton de Kock will make his international captaincy debut after being appointed for the remainder of South Africa's one-day international campaign against Sri Lanka, while JP Duminy will take the reins for the ensuing T20.

Cricket South Africa confirmed the appointments Tuesday with regular skipper Faf du Plessis ruled out for the rest of the series after injuring his shoulder in Sunday's third ODI.

De Kock, a damaging wicketkeeper-batsmen who has been compared to Adam Gilchrist, is a former South Africa Under-19 captain but will lead the senior side for the first time on Wednesday in Pallekele.

"To be honest, I am feeling quite nervous, it is an honour to be given this responsibility of captaining the Proteas," said the gloveman.

"I want to carry on where Faf has left off and to continue with his legacy. As a captain, I will try to stay true to myself and stay true to what I believe it takes to be a good leader.

"I will strive to help others going forward, just to be there as a captain."

The Proteas hold an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match ODI campaign, having clinched the series with a 78-run victory in Dambulla thanks to a debut century from Roy Hendricks.

Du Plessis hurt his shoulder while diving for a catch and played no further part in the match.

"Faf sustained an injury to one of the rotator cuff tendons in his right shoulder and will unfortunately be unavailable for the rest of the tour," team manager Mohammed Moosajee said on Monday.

"He will need a rehabilitation period of up to six weeks to make a full recovery."

Coach Ottis Gibson said Aiden Markram, the young batsman who captained South Africa in five ODIs against India earlier this year, was not considered as a captaincy fill-in this time.

"Aiden captained against India and he is not currently in the team, he has had some struggles on this Sri Lanka tour so far," Gibson explained.

"We thought we would have a look at Quinton for the next two games, which will give Aiden time to settle himself.

"He is a fine player and we are confident he will find form and there will be other opportunities for us to continue to grow that side of his leadership."

A one-off T20 international in Colombo on August 14 that will cap a tour which included two test matches that were convincingly won by Sri Lanka.

"For the last while when Faf was rested or injured JP has been the T20 captain," Gibson continued.

"He has done a good job with that, leadership in the T20 format has brought the best out of him so that is something we will continue with."

South Africa's next assignment will be a home limited overs tour by Zimbabwe starting in late September.
