A video of Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar playing street cricket in Mumbai has quickly gone viral in the cricket-mad nation.

On Monday, Tendulkar's former teammate Vinod Kambli posted video of The Little Master hitting a few balls with some stunned locals near a construction site in the Vile Parle neighbourhood of Mumbai.

Vision on social media shows Tendulkar emerging from a black SUV and shaking hands with around six men, who had set up a match using a piece of temporary red construction fencing as the stumps.

Having been handed a bat, Tendulkar faced up to the bowling as cars and tuk-tuks drove past, playing five deliveries back to the bowler.

Unsurprisingly, it didn't take long for other locals to converge, surrounding the 44-year-old to take selfies with the nation's greatest-ever cricketer.

Tendulkar, who retired from international cricket in 2013, has an 'icon' role with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. The Indians will take on Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday night.

Tendulkar's immense fame in India is such that he is said to sometimes drive his beloved sports cars around Mumbai in the dead of night to avoid being recognised by his adoring fans.

In 2014, Australian allrounder Glenn Maxwell similarly joined in a game with some locals in Dubai on Australia's tour of the UAE.
