Age doesn't matter: The case for an in-form Marsh

Hailed as 'the best performance I've seen from him' by an Australian cricket veteran that knows him best, Shaun Marsh's double-ton has put him back in the Test frame

Fresh off a career-best 214 in the Marsh Sheffield Shield, veteran batsman Shaun Marsh has elevated himself back into the conversation for selection in Australia's Test team.

Marsh's innings, which included 29 fours, earned him the player of the match in Western Australia's nine-wicket win over Victoria. In the absence of his brother Mitch due to a broken hand, Marsh took the reins as captain and had a "perfect four days", according to his coach Adam Voges.

Voges said that 36-year-old's double century was as good as he'd seen from the classy left hander.

"I said to him after the game in front of the group that I think it's the best performance I've seen from him," said Voges, who also enjoyed a lot of success as a batsman late in his career.

Voges knows as well as anyone that age is just a number when it comes to Test cricketers. After 13 seasons with Western Australia and several county stints in between, Voges finally earned a Baggy Green well into his 30s.

Shaun Marsh Cup? Veteran puts on batting masterclass

"I debuted (for Australia) when I was 35. Age doesn't matter," Voges said.

Marsh's numbers have continued to improve as he has gotten older. At age 30 he averaged 35.77 in first-class cricket, but has averaged 46.51 in the six years since.

Marsh might take some hope in the fact that Voges, Chris Rogers and Mike Hussey all flourished in Test cricket on the 'wrong side' of 35, but that's not front of his mind, says his coach.

"He's probably worrying less about what's happening at international level now. He's just really focused and committed to playing good cricket for WA," Voges said

"When you keep it really simple like that, which I think Shaun is doing right now, then you don’t have the other outside distractions and he can get on and play some good cricket."

Voges played a typically straight bat when asked if Marsh should be considered for the opening Domain Test Series match against Pakistan at the Gabba from November 21.

"It's about the philosophy the selectors want to go down in terms of picking an Australian team," Voges said.

"The best way to pick a team is to pick the guys who are scoring runs. If that is the case, then Shaun has put his name up – as have a number of players around the country.

"That's not my job … but I'm glad for Australian cricket that there's a number of batsmen putting their hands up and scoring runs at the moment."
