ODIs to be played in good spirit: Smith

Steve Smith expects tensions to have cooled off when Australia and India meet in ODIs

Steve Smith is confident Australia and India can move past the tension of a heated Test series earlier this year when the two teams meet again in Chennai on Sunday.

Australia have returned to India for the first time since their fiery and controversial Border-Gavaskar series in February-March, which India won 2-1 and which ended with the home side's skipper Virat Kohli declaring some of his friendships with the Australian players had been irreparably damaged.

While 12 players from that Test series have been named in their respective ODI squads for the upcoming five-match series, Smith expects tensions to have cooled off.

"I think it'll be played in good spirit," the skipper said on Sunday

"It's always a hard-fought contest playing against India and we're excited by the challenge of playing over here.

"Looking back to the last one-day tour of India, I wasn't on it in 2013, but it was a big run-fest from memory with pretty flat wickets and big totals. We'll see what we're presented with but it could be the same again."

While this tour represents the first time since the Test series that the two nations have come face to face, Smith and several of Australia's big-name players played with and against Kohli and his India teammates during the Indian Premier League earlier this year.

Smith played alongside Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane at Rising Pune Supergiant, opener David Warner with paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar at Sunrisers Hyderabad and batsman Travis Head - who didn't play in the Test series but is a part of the ODI squad - played alongside Kohli at Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Smith and his six Test teammates who landed in Chennai from their recent tour of Bangladesh on Saturday night missed Australia's training session at the Chepauk Stadium on Sunday morning, while the other seven players in the ODI squad - Head, Aaron Finch, Adam Zampa, Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Faulkner, Marcus Stoinis and Kane Richardson - were put through their paces.

The full squad is expected to train on Monday before their only tour match against a local team, reported to be a Board President's XI, at Chepauk on Tuesday.
