Protea Klaasen takes Smith's IPL spot

South African wicketkeeper-batsman joins Rajasthan after Australian's contract was torn up by the BCCI

Hard-hitting Proteas wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen will replace Steve Smith at Rajasthan Royals following the Australian's ban from the 2018 Indian Premier League season.

After Smith stood down from the Royals captaincy in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal, his $2.4 million contract was torn up by the Board of Control for Cricket in India for his involvement in the Cape Town saga.

Indian fans will be familiar with Klaasan, who hit a rapid-fire 69 from 30 balls in his second T20 international against India in Centurion in February.

The 26-year-old was bought for $100,000 by Rajasthan, who will be captained by Ajinkya Rahane this season.

Along with Smith, David Warner has had his IPL deal with Sunrisers Hyderabad worth $2.4 million terminated and been replaced by England international Alex Hales.

Smith was banned for 12 months by Cricket Australia and is ineligible to hold a leadership position for at least two years in the Australian cricket team.

An emotional Smith fronted media upon his arrival in Sydney last Friday and apologised for his actions in Cape Town.

"I know I'll regret this for the rest of my life; I'm absolutely gutted,” Smith said.

"I hope in time I can earn back respect and forgiveness.

"I've been so privileged and honoured to represent my country and captain the Australian cricket team.

"Cricket is the greatest game in the world. It's been my life, and I hope it can be again.

"I'm sorry and I'm absolutely devastated."

The 2018 IPL season begins on Sunday.
