Broad relives 'terrible' game-clinching shot

"I looked to mid-wicket and the ball wasn't there and then I looked up and it had gone over mid-off"

It wasn't quite Bevan-esque in its execution, but Stuart Broad's final-over heroics have helped breathe life back into the Hobart Hurricanes' KFC Big Bash League campaign.

The Englishman's self-described 'terrible shot' sealed a miraculous victory off the night's final delivery in front of close to 27,000 fans at Melbourne's Etihad Stadium.

Umpires' Verdict: Renegades v Hurricanes

The left-handed tail-ender walked to the crease in the final over with his side still needing 14 runs off four balls from Thisara Perera for victory.

Here's a quick rundown of how it played out (or just watch the video above…)

Over 19.3: Broad swings and misses at a delivery called a wide by umpire Phil Gillespie as Sam Rainbird runs through for a single before a mix-up between the batters almost leads to a run out, only for an errant throw to then result in an overthrow, handing Broad back the strike and leaving four balls still remaining. Hectic.

Over 19.3: A slower ball from Perera is chipped by Broad to the mid-wicket region and some good running between the wickets resulted in two more.

Over 19.4: Broad steps across his stumps and brilliantly lifts Perera over the in-field down to the fine-leg boundary where no player was to be seen. Four runs.

Over 19.5: With five needed off the final two deliveries, Broad attempts what can only be described as a dirty slog, only for the outside edge to beat Brad Hogg and race across the turf for another boundary.

Over 19.6: A game for the ages finishes with a leading edge from Broad back down the ground, enough for the Hurricanes to claim the win and spark the jubilant scenes on enemy territory.

"I tried to hit it over mid-wicket," Broad told bigbash.com.au of his final shot.

"I looked to mid-wicket and the ball wasn't there and then I looked up and it had gone over mid-off.

"It was a terrible shot, to be honest. But when the fielders are in close trying to stop one, my theory was that anything with a bit of bat speed was a chance of clearing them.

"I didn't quite know what to do, I actually ran back for the second just to be sure."

The record-breaking run chase led by Ben McDermott's phenomenal century and capped off by Broad's blade in the thrilling final stages saw the Hurricanes move to fifth on the points table with three wins and four losses.

Quick Single:McDermott pays tribute to axed legend

The Hurricanes now face a nervous wait ahead of their final match of the regular season on January  21 against Perth Scorchers at Blundstone Arena where they may or may not already know their finals fate before a ball is bowled.

McDermott with one of the greatest T20 knocks

"We had to win to stay in the comp and to do it in that fashion is pretty spectacular," Broad said.

"It was some of the best entertainment I've ever been involved in and it was a tough night to be a bowler, I must admit."
