Windies coach Law banned by ICC

West Indies coach to miss the opening two one-dayers against India following an altercation with the umpires during the second Test

West Indies coach Stuart Law has been suspended for his side’s first two one-day internationals against India after comments made to the third and fourth umpires during the second Test in Hyderabad.

Law was found to be in breach of the International Cricket Council’s code of conduct for the incident which occurred on day three following the dismissal of Kieran Powell, who was given out caught from the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin.

It was initially unclear whether the catch to Ajinkya Rahane at first slip had carried. The soft signal from the on-field umpires was that the ball had carried, with third umpire Nigel Llong unable to find conclusive evidence to overturn the on-field call.

His dismissal for a duck came as the Windies crumbled to 127 all out in their second innings, before India wrapped up a 10-wicket win.

A statement from the ICC stated Law went to the TV umpire’s room, where he made inappropriate comments to third umpire Llong.

He then walked to the fourth umpire’s area, where in the presence of players, directed further inappropriate comments to Nitin Menon.

Law was found to be in breach of Level 2 Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. In addition to the suspension, which will see him miss the opening two ODIs in Guwahati and Visakhapatnam, Law was also fined 100 per cent of his match fee and received three demerit points.

With four demerit points accrued within a 24-month period – having already received one point for a charge during the Dominica Test against Pakistan in May last year – Law was slapped with the two-match ban.

Law admitted the offence on Monday and accepted the sanction.

The former Australia batsman is set to leave his position with the Windies in December, following their tours of India and Bangladesh, having accepted a new position with English county team Middlesex.
