Star Blues saved for Shield showdown

The six New South Wales players that took part in the World Cup and Ashes won't be seen for their state until the start of the Sheffield Shield season

New South Wales' Test stars will be given a further week of rest ahead of the start of the new Marsh Sheffield Shield season next month.

The six Blues that took part in the recent World Cup and Ashes campaigns have returned to Australia, but won't take part in this week's Marsh One-Day Cup double header against Western Australia at Drummoyne Oval.

Instead they will be given further time to rest ahead of NSW's first Shield clash of the season that commences on October 10 against Queensland at the Gabba.

It means the likes of David Warner, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon could be selected to take on a Queensland side that includes Test hopefuls Joe Burns and Usman Khawaja and Ashes performer Marnus Labuschagne.

One player who may not be seen against the Bulls is Kurtis Patterson as the left-hander picked up a quad injury over the weekend and has been ruled out of the Blues' two domestic ODI's this week.

The Blues named a 13-man squad for the two matches against Western Australia, with batsman Nick Larkin earning a late reprieve as Patterson's replacement.

Wicketkeeper Peter Nevill will once again captain NSW as the Blues look to pick up their first win of the revamped 50-over competition.

The Blues fell to disappointing losses against Queensland and South Australia during the opening week of the tournament and will take on an undefeated Western Australia side that is high on confidence following a pair of wins.

Mitch Marsh's side have picked up a bonus point in each of their two victories and have 11 players with international experience within their unchanged 13-man squad.

Opener D'Arcy Short was the star for Western Australia during their most recent triumph, with the left-hander stroking a superb century in quick time against Tasmania last week.

Short has already played four ODI's and 20 T20's for his country, but the 29-year still has aspirations to earn a Baggy Green and play Test cricket for his country.

"White-ball cricket had taken over a little bit, but I still want play Shield cricket and push my case at the highest level,” Short said.

"My dream is still to play Test cricket.

"I want to play as much red-ball cricket as I can, perform and be as consistent as I can at that level.”
