Warner unsold, Cup winners dominate Hundred draft

Australia's world-dominating women were popular while a host of big name men weren't at the Hundred draft

Australia's World Cup-winning cricketers have dominated the women's picks for the Hundred draft but high-profile men David Warner, Aaron Finch and Steve Smith all failed to attract interest.

Captain Meg Lanning and her team of stars were in high demand on Tuesday, with clubs swooping for seven members of the winning Aussie side just two days after they helped their country to victory over England in the 50-over showpiece event in New Zealand.

But while Matthew Wade and Adam Zampa were among the eight Australians to be picked up in the men's draft, T20 World Cup-winning openers Warner and Finch along with others like Smith, Jhye Richardson and Josh Inglis went undrafted.

The availability of Australia's leading men remains uncertain for the competition which will run through August and into early September, with the schedule for an Australia one-day series against Zimbabwe yet to be confirmed and likely to overlap.

Lanning, Alana King (both Trent Rockets), Megan Schutt, Beth Mooney (both London Spirit), Rachael Haynes, Annabel Sutherland (both Welsh Fire), Tahlia McGrath (Southern Brave) were the ODI champions to earn new Hundred deals, while the injured Sophie Molineux (Birmingham Phoenix) was also snapped up.

They joined Ellyse Perry (Phoenix), Alyssa Healy (Northern Superchargers) and Amanda-Jade Wellington (Brave), with that trio already holding contracts going into the draft.

Lanning, Mooney, Healy and Haynes were all in the top price bracket of A$54,000, with the salaries in the women's competition doubling from last season.

The women's Hundred begins four days after the final of the Commonwealth Games cricket event being held in Birmingham.

At £125,000 (A$215k), wicketkeeper-bat Wade (Phoenix) was the most expensive Australian picked up in the draft, joining allrounder Marcus Stoinis (retained by the Brave) in the top price-bracket.

After leg-spinner Zampa went to the Welsh Fire for A$172k, pacemen Kane Richardson (bought by the Phoenix for A$103k) and Riley Meredith (A$129k to the London Spirit) both earnt deals, while Hilton Cartwright (A$86k) was picked up by the Tom Moody-coached Oval Invincibles.

Sean Abbott joined the Manchester Originals for A$103k alongside Daniel Worrall (A$129k), with Worrall signing as a local English player (meaning he won't count to the three player per team overseas cap) having already signed a three-year deal with county side Surrey.

Along with Stoinis, the Spirit's Glenn Maxwell (A$172k) and the Brave's Tim David ($86k) were the other Australians to be retained by their teams, though only David played in last year's inaugural tournament.

West Indies allrounder Kieron Pollard was the first pick of the draft and the 34-year-old will join the Spirit, who finished bottom of last season's standings.

England captain Heather Knight was retained by the Lord's-based Spirt, who also added New Zealand allrounder Amelia Kerr, while opener Tammy Beaumont made the switch from Spirit to the Fire.

Australian Trevor Bayliss has taken the role as the interim head coach of the men's London Spirit side following the tragic passing of legend Shane Warne.
