Proteas lose Amla for Bangladesh clash

Veteran opener ruled out of match against Bangladesh after blow on helmet in World Cup opener

South Africa are bowling first as they seek their first win of the World Cup against Bangladesh at The Oval, but the Proteas have been dealt a blow with opener Hashim Amla ruled out of the clash.

Amla copped a nasty blow to the helmet in South Africa's opening game against England at the same venue on Thursday and while he returned to continue his innings, he has not recovered sufficiently from concussion to take his place against Bangladesh.

"Hashim hasn’t fully recovered from the blow sustained to the helmet during the match against England on Thursday and is not available for selection for the match today," Proteas team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee said.

"With the quick turnaround between the two matches, he is being rested as a precaution, based on our post-match re-assessment. We are hopeful that he will make a full recovery to be available for selection for our next match against India."

England start Cup campaign in style

Replacing him in the XI is David Miller, who was left out of the match against England, while Aiden Markram will open the batting alongside Quinton de Kock.

The Proteas made one other change, bringing in the pace of Chris Morris for Dwaine Pretorius.

Bangladesh are playing their first match of the tournament, looking to cause an upset against their higher-ranked opponents.

Meanwhile, South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has challenged his side to make amends for the 104-run thrashing they suffered to hosts England.

The Proteas had restricted England to manageable 8-311 but, tormented by Jofra Archer's pace and bounce, their run chase never got going.

"This is where it's important for us to make sure that you look at the World Cup for what it is. You know, you're going to play games. You're going to come up against quality opposition," Du Plessis said.

"England were better than us in all three facets of the game. They showed why they are such a good cricket team, and now we have to look at the league. It's a league competition.

"For me, it's about making sure we look at the areas that we got it wrong and just move on."

News on the injury front was better for Bangladesh, with captain Mashrafe Mortaza playing despite suffering a hamstring strain while bowling during their warm-up match against India on Tuesday, while Tamim Iqbal, who did not play that match due to a thigh strain, is also available.
