The U16 Australia Team is a program run by School Sport Australia (SSA) and supported by CA.The team is comprised of players from the recent 15 & Under SSA National Championships, spent two days at Cricket Australia’s National Cricket Centre (NCC) in Brisbane honing their skills at the state-of-the-art facility.
The 14-player squad were addressed by former Australia captain and National Talent Manager Greg Chappell, who spoke about what it takes to succeed in the sub-continent, the demands of becoming an elite cricketer and some of his own touring experiences.
Australia coach Darren Lehmann also met the group during training and a practice match at Allan Border Field, passing on his advice and encouragement.
North Queensland’s Bryan Hawke and former New South Wales coach Matthew Mott will handle the coaching duties on tour, guiding the squad for the fortnight against a selection of combined provincial school teams.
Also at the NCC, CA consultants John Davison and Brad Hogg helmed a spin camp that featured Australia’s top tweakers, including Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar, James Muirhead, Cameron Boyce, Clive Rose and Adam Zampa.
Victoria’s Ray Bright and Tasmania’s Richard Allenby were also on deck to assist the spinners, along with Test spinner Nathan Lyon and New South Wales spin bowler Steve O’Keefe, acting as a mentor while recovering from injury.
One half of Australia’s most prolific opening partnership, Matthew Hayden dropped in to discuss playing spin on turning wickets with both camps earlier in the week.
Hayden enjoyed success on the Subcontinent, in particular in 2001 against India where the broad-shouldered left-hander swept his way to more than 500 runs in the three-Test series, including his first double century.
The spin camp wraps up today.
