Classy Khawaja posts hundred on debut

Usman Khawaja became the second Australian to score a debut hundred for Glamorgan in the space of seven weeks on day three of his side's County Championship clash with Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

Khawaja only touched down in England last week, and after being trapped lbw for four in the first innings, he came good in the second, making a dashing 125 from just 143 deliveries to help set the hosts 294 to win – a target they knocked 25 from without loss before the close.

"I was still a bit jet-lagged in the first innings and didn't feel right, but it was nice to get some time in the middle," the Test batsman told BBC Sport Wales.

"I came out with a bit more positive intent (in the second innings). I felt good from the start.

"We knew a lead of 250-plus would be very nice when I came in. We got close to 300 and it can be one of those wickets where it can be a bit of a grind.

"The bowlers here bowl differently in different conditions, but I love coming to England and playing county cricket because it is so different from Australia. It's a nice challenge."

Khawaja replaced Shaun Marsh as an overseas player at Glamorgan after the West Australian, who also made a century in his first match for the county, was recalled to the ODI squad under new coach Justin Langer.

Somerset signing and fellow Australia Test batsman Matt Renshaw also hit three figures in his first appearance in the County Championship, and on the weekend made it three in eight innings with 106 against Notts at Taunton, with the final day of that match to begin later today (Tuesday).

At Old Trafford, there were unusual scenes when an Air Ambulance was forced to land on the outfield after a Lancashire member suffered a suspected heart attack. Players left the field and the game was delayed for around 30 minutes, though the Essex batsmen retained their composure to get home by five wickets.

Meanwhile, division two side Derbyshire on Monday announced the signing of Scottish batsman Calum MacLeod for the upcoming T20 domestic tournament – just a day after his epic 140no earned Scotland an historic win over England.
