Vatican latest state to embrace cricket

As cricket continues to grow in popularity around the world the Vatican is the latest state to embrace the sport with the start of an official cricket competition.

The St Peters Cricket Club is set to launch this week with hopes of fielding six teams, as reported in The Australian.

The driving force behind the competition is John McCarthy, who used to hold a position with the SCG Trust before being appointed the role  as Australia's Ambassador to the Holy See in April 2012.

The Vatican city has a population of less than 1000 and players will come from the more than 400 cricket fans at the seminaries and universties within the walled enclave.
