Victoria enlist 'cricket superstar' for Matador

Allrounder Ian Holland is on track to complete an impressive career revival after he was named in Victoria's 14-man squad for the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup to be played in Sydney next month.

Holland received a rookie contract with the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers in the 2012-13 season when he was announced as the winner of Foxtel's 'Cricket Superstar' television show.

The young allrounder was then delisted in April 2014 after failing to break into the state's first XI during his two seasons on the Bushrangers list.

However, Holland compiled an irresistible case for a recall in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition last summer. The 24-year-old scored 724 runs at an average of 40.22, claimed a season-high 52 wickets at 13.72, and became just the second player to score a century and take a five-wicket haul in a Premier final as Ringwood defeated Monash Tigers.

Holland has done his chances of a state debut no harm this pre-season with an impressive showing at the Bushrangers' recent 'survival of the fittest' training camp in Dargo, 348 kilometres east of Melbourne.

"Ian Holland, along with Guy Walker and Jake Reed, was a standout on the camp and he is a player that can fill a lot of roles for us," new coach David Saker said.

"He can bat, bowl and is really strong in the field."

Seven members of the Victorian squad were recently a part of the Australian touring party in the British Isles and Saker made it clear that his side had high hopes for the three-week tournament.

"With the quality in the squad we should really be competing to win the title," he said.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade will be looking to lead the Vics to their first one-day title since the drought-breaking victory in 2010-11, however, they'll have to do so with both Glenn Maxwell and Peter Siddle away with the Test squad on the Qantas Tour of Bangladesh.

Former skipper Cameron White enters the summer having won the player of the tournament award in the previous two editions of the one-day tournament, while World Cup champion Aaron Finch will be expected to lead the way at the top of the order.

Saker's first task as Victorian coach will be to come up against the Cricket Australia XI on October 7 at Hurstville Oval. The all-new domestic squad will likely include up to a handful of up-and-coming Bushrangers, with the likes of James Muirhead and Matthew Short among the possible inclusions.
