Prolific Kohli edges closer to ODI greats

India captain Virat Kohli has again staked his claim for the mantle as the world's leading white-ball batsman after drawing ever closer to the two most prolific one-day international century-makers of all-time, Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting.

Kohli passed triple figures in the ODI arena for the 28th time on Thursday, putting a hapless West Indies to the sword to seal a 3-1 series win in Jamaica.

His unbeaten 111, yet again spearheading a successful second-innings run chase, saw the right-hander draw level with Sri Lanka champion Sanath Jayasuriya in third position on the list for the most ODI hundreds.

Former Australia captain Ponting (30 ODI tons) is now in Kohli's sights, with his countryman Tendulkar's all-time benchmark of 49 centuries far from out of reach if he continues his incredible 50-over form.

To date, Kohli has outpaced Ponting and Tendulkar, both in terms of centuries made and overall runs scored. 

Ponting reached ODI ton No.28 in his 323rd match, while Tendulkar took 266 games. Kohli needed just 189.

The younger Indian's 115-ball knock on Thursday was also his 18th century in the second-innings of an ODI, passing Tendulkar (17 second-innings hundreds) as the leading century-maker in 50-over run chases.

"Today was another clinical performance for us. Winning in a chase is always a nice feeling," said Kohli after his match-winning ton at Sabina Park. "It's always about getting the team over the line.

"It's not about personal stats and personal achievements but ensuring we get to the target that's on the scoreboard."

While Kohli is seemingly on track to become the most prolific 50-over batsman ever, he could face some stiff competition for that title should South Africa veteran Hashim Amla keep eclipsing the new run-scoring marks he sets.

Fresh from erasing Kohli's names from the books as the fastest man to 5,000, 6,000 and 7,000 ODI runs, Amla last month became the quickest to 25 hundreds in his 151st match. It had taken Kohli 162 games.

Kohli responded by becoming the quickest to 8,000 ODI runs during India's semi-final against Bangladesh in Cardiff, reaching it in his 175th innings.

The 28-year-old comfortably broke the previous record of 182 innings, set by South African AB de Villiers against New Zealand in August 2015.

But Amla, who now sits on 7,186 runs after 153 innings, is likely to be hot on his heels once again.
