Kohli becomes all-time leading IPL run-scorer

Batting maestro passes Suresh Raina on the T20 tournament's all-time run-scoring charts with knock of 92 for RCB

Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli added another record to his already glittering batting resume after become the Indian Premier League's all-time leading run-scorer on Tuesday.

Kohli's brilliant, but ultimately fruitless 92 not out was not enough to get the star-studded franchise over the line against Mumbai Indians, who ran out 46-run victors on the back of Rohit Sharma's brutal 52-ball 94.

It would likely have been of little consequence to the underperforming RCB, but Kohli's 62-ball cameo pushed him past Suresh Raina on the IPL's run-scoring chart.

The India captain begun this year's tournament more than 100 runs shy of Raina and, despite his side's 1-3 start, skipped out of the blocks with innings of 31, 21 and 57 before his lone hand against Mumbai.

Having only batted twice so far in the year's IPL for scores of 14 and 4, Raina now trails Kohli by 61 runs.

Kohli, Rohit battle as Mumbai succeed

The 31-year-old could wrestle back his crown when his Chennai Super Kings face Rajasthan Royals on Friday and then against Sunrisers Hyderabad two days later.

Despite boasting the likes of Kohli and AB de Villiers in recent seasons, Bangalore have never won an IPL title (they've been runners-up three times) and had a horror 2017 campaign, finishing bottom with just three wins.

Kohli said he was "optimistic" of turning the franchise's fortunes around in 2018 with improved bowling stocks, but RCB have twice conceded more than 200 through four games and also lost to Kolkata after posting 176.

"The batting has been strong point for RCB over the years, but I think the strengthening of our bowling department has been a massive boost for us from this auction," Kohli said ahead of the tournament

"More than the fans, I want to win the cup. I have been with Bangalore for the last 10 years and we haven't crossed the final hurdle three times.

"I can assure you, my commitment is going to be 120 per cent to try and achieve the goal this time."

'Freak accident' forces 'keeper from field

Despite 2017 being, statistically, his worst IPL campaign in seven seasons with 308 runs at 31 from 10 games, Kohli was retained by RCB ahead of this season's mega-auction for an eye-watering A$3.4 million.

It's the biggest salary in the history of the competition. Kohli's INR 17 crore pay packet eclipsed the previous record held by Yuvraj Singh, who was bought by Delhi Daredevils for INR 16 crore in 2015.

Mumbai skipper Rohit (4345 career IPL runs), veteran batter Gautam Gambhir (4210) and suspended Australian David Warner (4014) round out the top five on the lucrative T20 league's all-time run-scoring charts.
