Sehwag awarded MCC Life Membership

India great joins illustrious group of cricket legends at Lord's

India great Virender Sehwag has received one of the greatest honours in cricket, after being awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

Sehwag, who retired from international cricket in 2013, joins the likes of India legends Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly on the list of MCC Honorary Life Members.

The 37-year-old was inducted after a 14-year international career that saw him score 8586 runs from 104 Test matches at an average of 49.34 and 8273 runs from 251 ODIs at 35.05.

Sehwag played just one Test at Lord's, scoring 84 and 27 against England in 2002, but has a long association with the MCC, having captained the club in the 2014 Champion County match against Yorkshire in Abu Dhabi, where he scored a match-winning ton.

The destructive opening batsman also represented the Rest of the World XI during the 2014 Lord’s Bicentenary match.

Dennis Lillee, Allan Border, Ricky Ponting and Jason Gillespie are among the Australians to have received the honour, while former Australia captain Michael Clarke was inducted last week.

MCC Head of Cricket John Stephenson welcomed Sehwag to the Club that includes more than 300 Honorary Life Members and 18,000 Full Members.

"It is always a pleasure to welcome new Honorary Life Members to the Club, and Virender is no exception," Stephenson said.

"He was a wonderfully entertaining player throughout his career and has also represented MCC with aplomb in the past, so is fully deserving of this honour."

Honorary Life Membership is awarded by the MCC Committee to individuals in recognition of the service they have given to the cricket and projects surrounding the game.
