Everything fell into place perfectly for WBBL tipster Nick Murphy, whose early-season guesswork helped him surge to the top prize in the last round

WBBL tipster Nick Murphy is $10,000 richer after taking out the BKT Big Bash tipping top prize for WBBL|07 despite taking a rather laidback approach to the competition.

In an effort reminiscent of Steven Bradbury's remarkable victory at the 2002 Winter Olympics, Murphy came from nowhere in the final round to take out top spot.

"In the first week I think I tipped two from nine, so I thought I was struggling," Murphy said.

"I think I was coming eighth with a week to go and I think I was about four behind.

"Being in other competitions in the past when you have to make up four in the last week it's near-on impossible, so I'm very lucky."

In a move that will frustrate the competition's hardest working tipsters, Murphy said he used an interesting tactic at the start of the season, pointing to a lack of knowledge about the game as his reason for the strategy.

Who is the most underrated player in the BBL?

"Funny story, I actually did all the tips six weeks in advance at week one. I had a look and saw I'd picked a few roughies so I thought I might just leave it and it's paid off," he said.

"I actually didn't know until the Monday (I'd won).

"I got a message from one of my mates who was keeping an eye on it … and I think I won by a margin with the Sixers, so I was pretty excited."

Not only was Murphy oblivious to his victory but the prize money as well, which he says was a pleasant surprise, and will be "summer cash" that will come in handy.

"I actually didn't know that ($10,000) was the main prize," he said.

Who is the BBL bowler that's hardest to get away?

"I was sitting in a room with my now fiancé at the time, so she was pretty happy with the thought of getting her something.

"I've got a mortgage and a car, so I'll pay off that and definitely look at paying for some of the honeymoon … and maybe some new clothes for the summer.

"Just some free cash that I didn't expect which I'm looking forward to."

With the KFC BBL starting on Sunday December 5, another lucky tipper will have the chance to take a further $10,000 home, with weekly prizes also available for the highest scorer each week.
