Thursday night lights: Fierce rivals to launch WBBL|08

Ahead of the WBBL|08 schedule release on Thursday, here is a sneak peek into what fans can expect from the eighth edition of the Women's Big Bash League

A blockbuster Thursday night showdown between fierce rivals Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers will launch the eighth edition of the WBBL this October.

The full Weber WBBL|08 schedule will be released on Thursday morning, but six of the Big Bash clubs have today offered some glimpses into the upcoming season, which will begin in Mackay on October 13.

All eight clubs will play home matches for the first time in three years – news that is particularly welcome for fans in Victoria, which has not hosted a WBBL game since 2019.

New South Wales also missed out during the WBBL|07 season, when games were unable to be played in Australia’s two biggest states due to border closures.

The regular season will run from October 13 to November 20, followed by finals.

Ahead of the full schedule reveal, here is what we know about WBBL|08 so far:

Adelaide Strikers

It’s back to the Barossa for the Strikers, who will play at Nuriootpa's Centennial Park for the first time since 2019. The ground will host a clash between the Strikers and the Stars on November 13.

Brisbane Heat

For the first time in three years, the WBBL will return to Brisbane’s revamped Allan Border Field. The ground was unavailable last season due to its redevelopment, while the WBBL|06 season was played in a Sydney hub.

Melbourne Renegades

The Renegades are returning to Ballarat’s Eastern Oval. Five clubs will feature in a four-match festival weekend, which will include a much-anticipated Melbourne Derby on October 29. The Renegades will then play Sydney Sixers on October 30, with the other two Ballarat matches to be confirmed on Thursday. Both Melbourne clubs will also make a welcome return to Junction Oval, with details to be revealed on Thursday.

Melbourne Stars

The Stars will head to Gippsland this season, with WBBL matches to be played at Moe’s Ted Summerton Oval for the first time. A festival weekend featuring three matches will be held on November 19-20, with the Stars to meet the Scorchers on Saturday. On Sunday, the Renegades will meet the Scorchers, before the Stars play the Heat.

Sydney Sixers

The Sixers are returning to North Sydney Oval after spending the entirety of last season on the road. The iconic venue will host matches – including a Sydney Smash – during the final week of the regular season, with the Sixers to meet the Heat (November 16), the Thunder (November 18) and the Hurricanes (November 20).
