Arthur ruled out of WA coaching race

Adam Voges and Kade Harvey among the frontrunners to take over from Justin Langer at Western Australia

Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur has been ruled out as a replacement for Justin Langer as Western Australia coach.

Arthur, who has family connections in Perth and coached WA between 2010 and 2011, had been touted as a possible candidate to fill the vacancy created by Langer's appointment as the new Australian head coach.

But WACA chief executive Christina Matthews said discussions with Arthur were "not on the agenda" with the state seeking to appoint an internal candidate.

That leaves former Test batsman and ex-state captain Adam Voges and current Warriors and Perth Scorchers assistant Kade Harvey as the front-runners.

"We're looking at our internal candidates and those within our system first," Matthews said.

"So we'll go through that process and if we don't get a positive resolution through that we'll then probably advertise wider.

"We would hope we would find the right candidate within our own system.

"(Arthur) is currently not on the agenda. We know people who are currently under contract to different organisations. We are not in the business of encouraging people to break contracts. Mickey was not on our list."

Matthew said Langer's influence on the state would continue to be felt with the strength of the internal candidates.

"We've got some good experience (in the coaching ranks), and we've built a very strong coaching and high-performance structure over the five years with Justin," she said.

Respect to me is worth more than gold: Langer

"So it's about how we take that to another level. It's not just simply another body coming in to take over from Justin.

"There are several people within our coaching structure and Adam Voges is one of those. Adam was involved in our coaching programs last year, he went away with the Under 19s."

Matthews said the WACA hoped to announce an internal candidate early next month at the latest, ahead of the WA squad assembling for pre-season training.
